The aim of this study is to investigate instructors’ role in promoting university students’ performance in speaking. The researcher has adopted the descriptive analytical method. Data has been collected through the means of a questionnaire for a number of 50 university instructors of English language. They were requested to give their opinions on a number of 15 items. The most important results show most of students’ weakness in speaking activities as well as the limit speech time for all of them to speak orally. Results also show students’ shyness from speaking with other students. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that weak students should be provided with sufficient exercises and also students need to be helped to cope themselves with relevant materials and suitable level of difficulty and easiness. Finally, other topics are suggested for further studies such as difficulties that face first year university students in oral communication and investigating effectiveness of instrumental strategies at improving speaking skill.
