The Pragmatic Dimension of the Intentionality of Deictic Discourse in (The Proverbs of Nahj al-Balaghah)

Abstract

Pragmatics represents a vital extension of modern linguistics, transcending the formal structural boundaries of the sentence to enter the realm of live communication among language users. The significance of this field lies in its ability to explain how discourse meets the needs of human interaction, conveying the speaker's intentions and semantic cues to the recipient with full intentional awareness.

At the forefront of pragmatic inquiry stands the concept of "deixis" (or indexicality) as a key pillar closely linked to context and situational references. These terms do not derive their meaning in isolation; rather, their meanings are shaped by pragmatic intentions and branch into three primary dimensions: person, time, and place. Collectively, these elements play a pivotal role in constructing discourse and effectively guiding its semantic and intentional dimensions.

Consequently, the discourse of *Nahj al-Balagha* constitutes a rich corpus for pragmatic studies due to the linguistic and contextual issues it presents; deixis is a crucial aspect of this analysis. Thus, this research is dedicated to the topic: "The Pragmatic Dimension of Deictic Discourse Intentionality in the Proverbs of *Nahj al-Balagha*." The study focuses on the types of deixis (person, time, and place)—grounded in the context, situation, and conditions of discourse production—with the aim of tracing deictic elements, identifying their referents, and revealing their role in shaping meaning. Several key findings emerged, most notably that deictic elements of all types contributed significantly to establishing semantic connections between parts of the texts and defining the intended meaning, demonstrating that deixis can be more expressive than explicit statement
